Beekeepers Open Day Illawarra Sutherland

Come See The Bees, Beekeepers, and Friends

In conjunction with the Heritage Festival 2017, the Illawarra Beekeepers club is opening its’ doors to the wider community with an open day. If you are a beekeeper or just have an interest in bees, this is a great opportunity for everyone to visit the Bee Gardens at Sutherland and find out about the bees in our community.

These open days happen only once or twice a year and the last one was a huge success with hundreds of people from our local community, both beekeepers and bee enthusiasts visiting. The facility is a unique and fascinating place where people learn all about bees, experience the inner workings of bee colonies and beekeepers share their experience with other beekeepers and visitors alike.

The day will include wearing our protective clothing and inspecting a living healthy beehive in operation. This is a fascinating and wonderful experience especially for those who haven’t witnessed bees up close before. Safety is a priority so we even have special beekeeping protective clothing for children and all visitors. The day will feature Informative talks on beekeeping from some beekeeper club members, the life of a worker bee and native bees, Honey tastings and sales provided by club members, books on beekeeping along with wax products and lots lots more. Special bee information sessions and bee activities are planned for children to become actively involved in the day and learn about bees with a sample treat of honey on offer.

We will also host a BBQ Sausage Sizzle with Cold Drinks for Sale. Raffles with prizes including a beekeeping course for beginners [value $299], honey, books and lots lots more. The fantastic people from the Heritage Festival Council will be providing a free vintage bus trip for our visitors to jump on board and visit the beekeeper facility and other Heritage exhibits and sights in the Sutherland Shire.
